No one should get married unless they are willing to put in a lot of hard work and sweat. Marriage is a job, not play time. Well...at maybe once in a while. Personally, I no longer believe in marriage. I've been married twice and neither worked for me.
I admire those who have been married for ten or more years. That have love and respect for their spouses, and try really hard to work things out before the day is done. I do know several married couples, where one or both spouses are having affairs and are staying together for the sake of the kids or even worse yet, the sake of money or property.
Too often couples are not accepting of one another. Women are the worse at this. They think that their love will change whatever nasty habit their spouse may have. Funny thing is that nasty little habit the man has, that they want to change, probably was something cute to them once upon a time.
Marriage can be very fulfilling. But you have to accept a person for who they are...good and bad. You have to be willing, without a doubt, to put a lot of hard work and effort into it. Most people are not willing to do that or know to do that. If you respect the other person. Trust them. Are not jealous of them. Accept them fully, and love them with your mind, body and soul, then and only then should you try your hand at marriage.

Marriage is primarily a framework for raising a family, and confers certain economic & social benefits upon couples who go that route. It also offers an escape from the dating scene, and simplifies the question of whose bed to sleep in. In addition, people tend to grow and expand their horizons (no pun intended) if forced to deal with another human being who thinks differently from them (and man, do women think differently!) on a daily basis. There are still benefits to non-traditional or same-sex marriages, but I don't think one can overstate the significance of forcing men & women to cooperate in raising children.
But it's not something that everyone SHOULD do, by a long shot. Plenty of people have no inclination nor desire to get married, and shouldn't- they would just be miserable if they did it out of some misguided sense of societal expectation, or to make someone else happy.

A religious marriage ceremony represents a formal commitment to a partnership. Many people would like this in their lives.
The concept might function better if the word "marriage" strictly applied to religious ceremonies. A "civil union" could establish the rules and expectations of the partnership a priori, much akin to a traditional contract of partnership in business.
