It might be a BIOS issue. Rebot the computer and go into the CMOS setup, what size does it think the drive is? If the hardware doesn't think it's an 80gb drive, you'll need to update your BIOS, or use some disk management software. A really old computer might not recognize a drive that large, but anything less than 7-8 years old should be ok.

Fdisk again and create properly. Primary partition, secondary partition, and logical drives. You can get the full hd to use.

Otherwise, if you are installing WinXP. You can do it after installation is complete.

go to control panel > administrative tools > computer management > disk management.

When you click on disk management you will see graphics of your hard disk and its partitions. You will also see the unpartitioned space. You can right click on the space and select to format. Once the format is complete , it is usable.

That wouldnt just happen. Have you added a partition to the drive? Seems like the most obvious answer.
Right click my computer and select manage. The go to the disk management tab and look at the different drives available to you and also any unpartitioned space in the right hand pane.
If it is unpartitionmed space, you need to right click the space and create a partition so that space is available to you again
