ash is great for cleaning pennies. to clean diamonds use amonia (and a soft , old , toothbrush). that's what's in the professional cleaner machine.

i haven't tried ash for cleaning diamonds..but the superb way to clean diamonds is with a little bit of gasoline.. specially those diamonds which has some wax on it and the old ones..it will definitely look new after cleaning it with gasoline.. just dampen (not soaking) a cotton cloth with gasoline.. and then rub the diamonds in it..and voila..you have clean diamonds in a puff..

I believe that would be a mild solution of potash lye. Lye is very caustic and alkaline. It may not hurt the diamond, but it would screw up the setting. I wouldn't use it.

I think ultra-sonic would be good too.
