Make sure the paper isn't curled. Flatten out the sheets before inserting them. Also try a different grade of paper. Top-loading printers like the Laserjet 5L tend to encounter this problem more frequently than printers that take paper from a tray, like the 4L and 1300- but it can happen with any brand & model.

If the printer is fairly old & has done lots of printing, you might need to get it serviced. There are parts like rollers that wear down over time, and parts that accumulate toner and other residue, that eventually need cleaning & replacement.

Yes, it can happen to any brand of printer, especially when it operated under high dust environment and also the dust from the paper can stick to the rubber pickup roller wich can cause the pickup more slippery.
If you experience to repair printer, try to wash the roller and pickup mechanism, and replace the faulty parts, usually the separation pads are the most common failure parts causing this problem.
I've been using the old model of HP Deskjet and it's working well until now.
After HP release Deskjet 3320 series, yes, the mechanism not as smooth as the previous type, I think it's because the new low cost mechanism used to reduce prices.

Before you put stack of new papers into your printer, flip them like fast flipping a book. bent them a little.

The reason why your printer is taking more than one paper at the time is because the papers are stick to each other.
good luck

Maybe you don't have enough paper in the feeder.
Add more paper, and if the problem continues, then the printer needs adjusting by a pro.
