YES, they can. I began dating my boyfriend when I was 17, while I was living in California and he was living in Germany. It was a SAFE relationship, because we had met through a mutual friend and we had met before we began dating...therefore I knew he was exactly who and what he said he was.
Take in mind that long distance relationships take a lot of effort and trust. Trust is huge, because you arent always right around the corner to make sure he is being faithful. It also takes money. I was very lucky because my parents were generous with me with their money and I was able to fly over to Germany around 5 times a year, with him also coming to visit me other than that. So we saw each other quite often.
If you are thinking about getting into a long distance relationship, definitely take the time to ask yourself if you are a person who needs to spend every day with someone, or someone who cannot trust another person with your heart.
All in all though, a long distance relationship can work. It just takes two people who are truly in love to make it work.

It will last if you both put hard work and effort on it. Trust and communication is the best way to keep it alive. Agree on how you could both make it work, make a shedule and stick to it. I'm in a long -distance relationship too and we are doing fine. We are talking everyday.

it depends how far the distance is. If your partner lives more than a thousand miles away i don't think it's gonna last. Well, you can try to comunicate with each other but it isn't quite enough; isn't it? Let fate decides. I dont really believe in distant relationship, as the saying goes... "out of sight, out of mind" Good luck!

long distance relationships? oh yes..
it's very cool, exciting to have somebody far...but don't make him/her far from Ur heart.
the relations made depend upon love, trust and truth...
and moreover if u are in this long distance relationship 1st time.. u need to take some tests so that u could know that he/she is true to u.. and will stand with u ever and forever...
u need a chemistry and understanding...and a feeling of caring and missing...
