.020mm to start with. That should start the car make sure that the point faces are clean moving point should be convex a small wipe of grease on the distributor cam to lube the point block. Setting the points static is not as accutate ad a dwell meter 37 to 42 degrees I think for old stang. Then dust off the timing light and look at the crank pulley and timing cover marks. If you have a fancy timing light you can check the total advance of the distributor. Back in the old days the boys and I Down at the Chevron Gas Station always set up our distributors on a sun distributor machine. that would spin so we could check advance and dwell while running. That is why our cars were faster.

Too bad the dwell isn't as easy to set on a Ford. Chevy had the door that lifted and you could adjust it while running with an allen wrench.
As said, it is best to set dwell and not point gap.
