Ear infections are extremely difficult to detect by a parent. Babies at this age can not localize pain so, the pulling on the ears may not be due to an ear infection. He could be teething or just discovering his ears. I would go with the fever as an indication of sickness...if he has a fever for more then 24hrs certainly bring him to the doctor. You can call your doctor's office and talk to the nurse about this and see what she says. I understand this is extremely hard on a parent ... no parent wants their baby to suffer. But, try your best to remain calm and level headed. I know I was quick to worry and want to run off to the doctor when ever my baby showed any sign of sickness. But, often it's just an over worried parent and if you give it time your baby will be o.k. **** Luck!

Moisture will reduce the chances of the infection going away. Think of it like a cut, if you put a bandage over it, it keeps dirt out but if left on for long enough it will stay moist and won't heal properly. It is best to keep it covered with maybe cotton wool and follow any other directions from a doctor. To help, it may be best to keep your baby's surroundings quiet, even a small amount of noise can be painful. Make sure both ears get checked by a doctor in the next few days to make sure the infection is clearing up and hasn't spread.

Those are some signs that he may have an ear infection. You should take his temperature. If he has a low fever, I'd take him in on Monday. If he has a high fever, I'd take him to urgent care or ER. No temperture, it's probably not an ear infection.
Alot of pediatrician's and health insurances have a free after hours nurse line that can give you advice.
Stores also sell ear scopes now where you could look in your childs ears. If you go this route, you should look in them periodically when he's feeling well so you would have a good idea of what his normal ear looks like.

If he has no fever than I would wait and see how he is on Monday. If he is still having trouble then take him in. An ear infection is something that the Dr can look for one day and then next day it can develop.
Many ear infections will resolve themselves with our antibiotics, but it's a good idea to have him checked out. :) Good luck!

I agree with teething. Sometimes they will pull at the ear when they are teething. But if a fever occurs I'd say definately an ear infection.

signs of rednes on there ear, grabbing, pulling. That bout said it, Maybe a fevor, When that happens its not always nessesary to take them to a dr. every 5 sec.Just have a good ear medicine & baby tylenol in handy.. saves time... & it works quicker!!!!! than trying to fight traffic & sitting in the waiting room with an ill baby.. I have 3 kids trust me.. you would cut lots of time to the dr. if you have these supplies for your baby in hand @ home>> stock up

Our pediatric clinic recommends "going in" when:
-fever over 102*F
-not eating /drinking
-not peeing / pooping
-broken bones
Most babies this age tug at their ears and randomly don't sleep well. Observe your child. Keep checking temperature. Good Luck!
