Movable type for the printing press. This has allowed the mass production of books and the wide distribution of information leading to a super boom in inventions and a previously unprecedented storage of knowledge. It crushed the yoke of oppresive religion with the help of Martin Luthor through protestant works, and gave common serfs the tools to share ideas that would set them free such as in the French revolution. It allowed a standardisation of school texts, groups of scientists to work from the same knowledge far distances apart, and the start of globalisation through newspapers covering world events. In many ways the invention of movable type was the fore-runner to the internet. Movable type was invented by the chinese but they didn't have the printing press which was more common later in Europe, so movable type for the printing press invented by Johannes Gutenberg is my choice.

It's argued that the wheel is the best invention but, was it invented or just discovered..!? I think it is the internal combustion engine. Theres been barely any changes made in 100 years on the first engine designed.. (except for the wankel rotary engine which is in the mazda rx models)

many of ur answers are discoveries rather than inventions,an invention being something that can be patented.
to my mind the best invention is the internal combustion engine. this produced energy and led to the storing of energy and probably all that we have today -trade,production,free enterprise, communication etc
