Best batsman of the by gone era - Don Bradman

Best bastman in Test matches - Sunil Gavaskar

Best batsman in One day internationals - Sachin Tendulkar

on current form I think Mahela Jawardene is the best batsman in both Test matches as well as One day internationals scoring lots of runs with style and confidence against strong opponents with good bowling attack.
Take my word for it Mahela will shine and dazzle and take the cricketing world in surprise in the coming world cup and help Sri lanka to atleast advance to semi finals.

Brian Lara is still playing and is the best. It's not just that he's got most of the records, I'm sure he must have a very high batting average in all versions of the game.

But even that's not the reason for his receiving the nod from me. Throughout his career he's been playing for a team that constantly disappoints. He must constantly be under pressure.

Even that's not it. "The West Indies" is not one country. They were held together by sterling performances on the cricket field for thirty years starting in the mid-fifties. It is now a team that is losing support. I don't know about rankings; don't they change every month, depending on how active a team has been?

If you insist on a younger man - well, I don't know. There appears to be a terrible polarisation - people seem to be rooting for their countrymen. I have studied the problem - bad not just for cricket but for the future of the world.

there is no question, it is sachin tendulkar. Lets not forget that he does hold the records for most test and ODI centuries. His impact on the game as a batsman is phenomenal.
