Read up on SNMP and Syslog and try some NMS software (JFFNMS or OpenNMS for example--Google them). Then come up with a framework for displaying network nodes and links graphically.

Seriously check out as much existing software as you can. Make notes of what you feel they do well and what they are lacking. This way you can formalize goals for your project and go from there.

Were you talking about software development or just the basics of how to setup a network? I was a bit intoxicated last night when I answered your question and perhaps didn't read it correctly.

Someone slap my hand.

It's not really a tough task...so take it easy boy!

Visit Google & search one by one like:
1) What is Networking +Computer
2) Fundamental of Networking
3) How to setup a Network

And lastly type Computer Networking & search in Googel Image.

That's all.
Best of Luck.
