Yoga is basically programme of physical fitness by Pathanjali ,a saint of India.Later on it became mixed with meditation and part of Hindu and Buddhist religions. There are different kind of yogas and Raja Yoga covers mind and body.Yoga as a method of physical fitness alone is of modern origin. You can practice Hatha Yoga for fitness. There are many books available in the market.Best way to learn yoga is from a yoga teacher.
Yoga is not preparing for death as many think. It is for living peacefully. Some of the yoga practices like Shavasana cures sleeplessness, removal of tension/stress,heart and breathing ailments and mental disorders(not madness). It is Moderately beneficial for health and happiness.

Yoga was created as a way to prevent the muscle wasting buddhist monks suffered whilst sitting meditating all day.
There are loads of different styles of yoga, they range from Hatha (gentle relaxation) to Ashtanga Vinyasa (heavy cardio).
I'd really recommend you try a few classes of whatever style of yoga is taught near you. Learning from books means you miss out of having someone physically adjust you into the right position, which is vital until you get used to the shapes required.
The main thing to remember with yoga is it's a journey, not a destination. You really have to let go of the competitive side of your nature and learn to accept your own rate of progress. This can be extremely difficult when the person next to you is bouncing on their head, whilst you can't touch your toes yet!

yoga had its beginning to prepare the body for death. physical control of your limbs, breathing etc, and mental control to accept the onset of the unknown death.
it has been modernized into exercise and is a huge fad that has nothing to do with its origin. but people that perform yogo absolutely swear it is great for their health.
