Actually, fingerprints can be alike, but they are never identical. This is because the probability is so low because of the amount of variation of fingerprints.

Imagine that each person in the world were to have a random 1,000 digit number assigned to them. While it is theoretically possible that two could have the identical number, the chance is pretty close to zero.

They are extremely rare, but, as a matter of fact, two people with identical fingerprints were identified a few years ago, from widely-separated countries. I wish they had shown their pictures. The question should be rephrased: why are two sets of fingerprints ALMOST NEVER alike? I'm hedging so much to delay admitting that I don't have a clue!
