OKAY........Glad you asked. But, before I answer this, I wanna say that I have been hearing alot of griping on this Yahoo Answers thing, about tipping in general. People have been saying things like "If people don't like working for tips, then they should get real jobs"...And other things to that effect. The problem with that attitude is that when we go out to eat, we want good service. And there are alot of really good people in the food/bev industry. People who really like their jobs. Hard workers who have been serving or bartending for years and put forth every effort to ensure customer satisfation over and over again. And these people put up with alot.... People complaining about waiting to be seated, people complaining about food taking too long. People's kids running around getting in the way, people making horrible messes and being rude in more ways than I am able to mention here. And that's fine. It's part of the job. But, NOBODY waits tables for the $3.00 an hour that they make after taxes come out. NOBODY. So, when a waitress has offered outstanding service to someone that has taken up her time, her attention, and her table for 2 hours, and leaves 10% or less, it just increases the chances of her burning out. And eventually quitting. Because, aside from the financial aspect, it is a slap in the face. It's an insult. So, when the crappy tippers go out to eat, and they can't find service that is worth a damn anywhere, they need to realize that they are part of the problem.
10 % is a bad tip.
15% is fine.
Anything more is considered extremely generous.
If the service was legitimately horrible because of something done by the actual waiter and not the cooks, or a slow bartender, etc., you can leave no tip or a bad tip. But, it's better to say something to either the server or a manager.
Nobody has to tip anything. That goes without saying. But, it is customary. TIP is actually an ackronym that stands for TO ENSURE PROMPTNESS.... You get what you give.
Don't do that insulting little 5 penny thing. Be a grown-up. If you had bad service, say something. Ask the server why you had to wait for a refill while you saw them go outside to smoke. Don't be a jerk and leave pennies. MUCH more effective.

Here in America it is the 15% rule,I always tip 20% minimum and up to 50% for excellant service,I was a waitress for 8 yars and I have a lot of respect for them,it is a very hard job!If the service is awful I usually tell the person hopefully to help,and still tip because that is their pay!But if they are rude and surly I will tell the manager.

I used to not tip at all, unless the service was exceptional. Since I met my wife though, who is a waitress I usually tip 10-15%, unless the waitress is terrible, then I usually don't leave anything. My wife will usually leave some money as a tip even though the service sucks. I hate it when she comes home and tells me about jackasses who didn't leave her a tip. This expecially ticks me off because I know that she is a great waitress.

I usually go about 15 to 20%, Ann Landers said in her column years ago that tips should be interpreted to say
T=to
I=insure
P=prompt
S=service
She also said that if the service is lousy and you don't tip the server just thinks yer a jerk who forgot the tip. She said, and I've always done this, to leave like 5 pennies. That way they know you thought the service was bad.

I'm glad you put the word 'tip' in quotes and caps- because it is such a new term, and also one quoted by a famous person, and finally one that requires caution. The rule is 15%, and sometimes 20%. No wonder you've been getting bad service.

over a rushed lunch hour, I usually tip 10%. You get your food plunked down on the table and they are off. Busy time for them, so no level of service really.
Otherwise it is 15-20% depending on the restaurant and level of service.
I personally don't believe in tipping, as we are subsidizing the owner's salaries.
But you gotta go with the flow.

We just tip about 3 % here in our place and they are happy. Only waiters here, no waitresses.

If they 'suck' go to the manager and tell them that your server sucked and do not leave a tip. That way they know you wanted to leave a tip but you were dissatisfied.
always remember Tip means: To Insure Promptness.
