No fertilizer is better than the good compost. It's more healthy (and easy!) way to grow plants. Good compost and occasional Miracle grow, and my roses and the hydrangeas are bigger than ever. Too much fertilizers invite unwanted pests, too.

Hi Spice, The first thing that I would tell you to do, is to get your soil tested. Do you really need fertilizer? How is your garden doing? If you over fertilize and your soil becomes saturated with the salts in the fertilizers...it can burn roots and do more harm than good. Answering your question though: in short here are the "big three" that make up a complete fertilizer...and what they do for plants. N P K designates Nitrogen, Phosphurous and Potassium. Nitrogen produces green leafy growth ( and CAN inhibit flowering and fruiting), phosphurous is essentioal for root development, it also aids in flowering and fruiting. Potassium is essential for plant growth and for resistence to disease. That's a very brief summary. Nothing beats compost as a fertilizer and as a soil amendment. Good luck.

The best place to go for these answers is to a local nursery. Another is to go to the library and do some reading or the nearest Barnes & Noble. I own quite a few books on Gardening. It jusut so happens that I have a book with me at my computer called: Great Garden Formulas from Rodale. Some good ingredients are Blood meal, Colloidal phosphate, Cottonseed meal, Fish emulsion, green sand and Guano. My feeling is one can never have enough Gardening books.

Why don't you try Miracle Gro fertilizer. It is wonderful. There are two types. One contains an ingredient to keep the soil more moist. I also use Miracle Gro crystals that I mix in water and use about every two weeks.
