I am a teenager and have trouble sleeping. I am normally awake until 5 am or later and awake by 1:30 pm. Considering school is starting, I need to get back to a normal sleep schedule. Also, it just isn't healthy.

So, are there any good sleeping meds for teens?

No, Breezy, you're not good. This sleep deprivation is not good for me and staying up longer isn't going to help. It'll make me exhausted to the point I fall asleep at a wierd time and mess up my sleep-clock even more. -_-

I'd prefer SERIOUS answers from now on.

Listen, I shut off the TV, the phone, the computer. Nothing helps. And I don't want anymore of your junk-heap answers because they're not helping me in any way.

I even shut off the clock so the light doesn't bug me.

I have taken a decongestant that causes drowsiness and no reaction.

I wouldn't suggest sleeping medication.

This is what I would try:
Start getting up about the time as you normally would for class.
Stay *active* all day long, (not watching TV or plunking on the computer).
Have a glass of milk before bedtime.
If you're having trouble falling asleep at this point, read an algebra book.

Good luck.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net

Ohhh..and Good Luck!

Normal sleeping time for a teenager going to school should be from 10.00pm to 5.00 am. where as you start sleeping at 5.00 am and get up at 1.30 pm - just like jet lagging days.

Any way you should not take any medicine or tranquilizer and you have to practice to maintain the timing. If you take any medication you will get addicted to it and have lot of problems and bad side effects in the long run. What do you do from 10.00pm to 5.00 am? Are you spending time with TV or Computer or Phone. Just avoid every thing. Finish your dinner and go to bed putting off the lights at 10.00 pm. Some days you will not get sleep or have disturbed sleep. At the same time you have alarm at 5.00 am. and get up. The drowsiness etc. will be there for 4/5 days and after that you will get proper sleep.

Forget medications... take the herb Valerian.. it will help you sleep. If you are sleeping deeply then you don't need Valerian. The deeper you sleep the less you need! Sleep is actually over rated while resting is under rated! 5am to 1:30 PM that sounds like daytime sleeping to me! That also sounds like sufficient sleep! You mean you want to get back to night time sleeping so you're not asleep at school.. correct? You could just do something to exhaust yourself or else you can take Valerian tea before you go to bed!

Tylenol PM is a fairly safe sleep medication for anyone. It has benadryl in it which is an antihistamine. Be sure not to take too many though, one should be enough. But with any sleep medicine, if it does not help, do not take it for more than 7 days.

It sounds like you got into this routine with the start of the holidays. I suggest you get back into the routine of going to bed at the regular time before your holiday started-even if sleep doesn't come to you straight away- read something then try to relax and close your eyes. I think it is just a matter of getting back into the old routine. Once you train yourself into this, after a week you should be getting back into your normal sleeping mode. You will find it easier once you start school as you will get busy with assignments and become more active- this will make you ready to sleep by the end of the day. Just give your body time to get back into this routine.

I'm the same! I have to like medicine, but if you don't want to go to the doctors or buy anything I suggest doing this... I does work... think of 15 girls names that start with the letter A and then letter B and so on. If you haven't fell asleep then think of boys names. I swear it works. But also ambien works too, if you want a prescription. I hope this helps.

Ambien worked great for me, but of course only a doctor can prescribe it. Try getting on a sleep schedule. No matter what time you go to bed, get up at the same time each day. It should get better. If you have insomnia, see your doctor.

If the kid just cannnot go to sleep, there may be underlying issues that you need to discuss with your family MD, until you can get in to see them try Benedryll. It is completly safe, and non-habit forming.

*points at Mitchs answer* if the algerbra book doesn't make you sleepy substite it for the text book of the class that bores you the most.

My method is having a trustworthy sibling hit me over the head with a baseball bat. Side note I usually wake up with a headache when using the sibling baseball bat method.
