I've just read today's Yahoo news article about small electronic devices secretly fitted to our bins - probably hidden inside the new wheelie bins some councils are using.

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/26082006/323/electronic-bugs-turning-britain-s-rubbish-bins.html

Apparently they are there to track our rubbish throwing habits - but wouldn't this technology so easily be able to be abused, considering each bin has a serial number that can trace it directly to the owner of the bin?

If you've put any wrappers in there - perhaps from an MP3 player or something else - they can now easily see what expensive electronic stuff you have in the house. Any paperwork on anything and they know all your business...any food wrappers they know what you are eating, drinking, what shampoo you use...

This creeps me out.

And why the hell does the news article call the wheelie/rubbish bins "garbage bins" - surely that's an American term???

*is annoyed*

Well we use these kind of bins for a few years. And all these chips do is register the weight of the trash inside the bin. The chip registers the house to which it belongs and the lorry can weigh the bin. We've been using a system that is called pay as you polute eg the more or less you throw out the more or less you'll pay in bin tax!! It's helped my region to nearly cut waste by 2/3, it has helped people to recycle and use environment friendly sollutions for rubbish. It's the best thing the environment can have!!

They are only there to track when your bin is emptied and how full it is, (weigh the bin as it is beng lifted) not the actual contents. More for the convenience of the council to see if the refuse collectors are doing there job.

They call them 'garbage bins' because this IS an American site! Be like me - anything by which you could possibly be identified goes through the shredder!
