Contractions build with intensity over time. Everyone is different so don't get to hung up on other peoples experiences. Ask your Dr to describe 'back labour' to you if you are in doubt as this is probably the easiest to miss because it is just like a bad back ache. If this is your first you will probably have ages to wait between the first contraction and the last. My sisters first was 40 hours. My first was very quick, but believe me if you are going to have a five hour labour you will DEFINITELY feel the contractions.

PS the needing to go to the toilet that Mikki is talking about is a pretty accurate description of second stage labour

Believe me when I say you'll know! you will have regular pains they wont last long they will be quick and sharp what you need to do is time how long between each one if they are about five minutes apart and are very strong phone the labour ward. in most cases your waters will break then the contractions will get stronger and more frequent if you are in slow labour where your contractions keep coming and going this could go on for days remember to focus on the movements of the baby if the baby hasn't moved phone your midwife don't panic this happened to me he was fine moving rapidly but i couldn't feel it with the contractions but you will be fine.

Try to do some activity. If it provides you relief, it is not yet the time. Real labor contractions however persist no matter what you do. Observe the time the contractions occur. If they grow consistently longer, stronger and closer you need to go to the hospital and bring everything you need. Your water bag may broke or may not. You are about to deliver your baby if these labor pain occurs in an interval of 3-4 minutes.

You might have to be induced, not all pregnancies start contractions by them self.

It basically starts like period like cramps and works up in intensity over a period of time. Just relax and don't worry about it, if it does happen naturally you'll have enough time to get to the hospital.

Good luck when the time comes, you'll be fine x.

I agree with most people on here. You wont miss them. You willl have period type pains which get stronger. Time them, and if they go off and on, then you are in early labour. With me, they started in my lower back and worked there way around to the front of my bump. Good luck!

with my second baby it was a dull ache that kept coming and going and he was born an hr l8. but with my first baby i was asleep until 7am and he was born at 7:23am so sometimes u cant tell right til the last minute but usually u will feel an ache that gets worse, or waters breaking.
