Mario Lemieux is the Best ever. over 600 goals before he even played 1000 games. and Lemieux had a crappy team for years before winning the Stanley Cup. Wayne Gretzky had a team with him with Anderson, Kurri, Messier, Coffey, Fuhr etc.... and he played twice the amount of games Lemieux played. if Lemieux never had his cancer and other problems he had, he would have most records. Lemieux had better pts per game avg. then Gretzky even Mike Bossy would be up their if he didn't have injury problems.

lemieux is good, But gretzky's better, Both have had a great impact on team Canada over the past 20 Years, Gretzky's numbers i think will remain in stone for years to come, ill be dead and gone by the tiime someone breaks those numbers, Set the standard for how to play.Lemieux is and excellent adversity story, should inspire many young players for years, his leadership skills are among the greatest in recent years. But i do have one question for you, how come no one ever mentions Stevie Y when it comes to stuff like this, He is the Classiest player ever to play the game, he hasnt put up numbers like the aforemnetioned, but man he was a class act and i dont think he gets enough recognition fot that. Go Steviie Y!! Enjoy retirement

Lemieux probably had the best couple of seasons, but over a career I would say that Gretzky was better.

Between Lemieux and Gretzky I will go with Lemieux. I still think that Bobby Orr was the best ever.

If he was able to stay as healthy as Gtetzky did Lemieux would have given the great one a run for his money. Also think about who Gretzky is and who he was around. Lemieux didn't have a supporting cast in Pittsberg until Jagr got to the team.

Lemieux-I didn't see Gretzky retiring with a 2 points per game average. That is what tells you the REAL story of the carrer when it comes to scoring. If Mario had ever played a full season he proably could have got 215. Also if he hadn't been playing as a team player he could have. Remember he was on lousy teams at the start and was trying to build them up. Heck he proably could have got more points if he wanted.

Just wanted to say something that could really define who was the best. When watching ESPN Classics top 20 about whatever it was, they mentioned about Mario and his comebacks. In responce to that Gretzky said he wished he was as good as Mario.

tough question Lemieux was sick and hurt alot and didn't play as much. Gretzky owns alot of records in the NHL and more Stanley cups. i believe that given the number of games he played Mario had the better average for points and may have outdone Gretzky given the time

Gretzky will be considered the best, because he was also the ambassador of hockey for the last 25 years. Lemieux was just as talented, but injuries kept him from reaching his full potential. Lemieux is my all time favorite, but all round Gretzkey is the best.
