If you are American and applying through Buffalo (only option for Americans), you are going to have about a two year wait on your hands.

I'm in the middle of the process right now. The best I can suggest is that you read and reread the instructions on the paperwork and everyone on the CIC and local consulate websites very carefully. Follow the directions to the letter. Be anal about creating your application - cutting corners is a very bad idea. Make sure that the letters from your employers detail your duties and experience and that they match up with your resume. Document Document Document! Once you get your AOR (Acknowledgement of Receipt), don't bug the immigration people about your status.

The best discussion forum on Canadian immigration that I have found is at http://www.immigration.ca/discussion/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=4 Remember that none of this is official information, but the personal experiences provide a lot of insight.

I have. Actually permanent resident status has been aproved and I am traveling to Canada early september.
I went through the whole process but your question is very open. Perhaps if you give more details on a particular issue you are concerned with?

To begin with, my first suggestion would be to completely read the information included in the "immigration canada" website as well as in the canadian embassy in your country. That should give you a very good idea of what to expect.

The processing time of your application varies from place to place. In my case, Mexico, it took about 14 months, from submission of first papers to visa being issued.

You might know this, but in the embassy´s webpage they have a questionnaire that will help you decide whether you qualify for skilled worker visa as there are certain criteria to be fulfilled.

There are also many attorneys which you can hire to help you. I would recommend this only if your case is complicated (like problems with the law, previous rejected applications, etc..)

good luck

I strongly suggest you not to pay anyone to fill the paper work, just follow the instructions and make sure to give the accurate and complete info. The process might take between 6 months to a year (considering the delays isnt bad). Every province has different requirements and depends where do u wanna live that you need to apply. 1st the provincial goverment then the federal. And yes, if u go to the link (previously given to you) you'll find all the details. Normally u have to apply from your country's canadian embasy.

We went and checked on the Canada website too see if my husband qualified, just because we thought he would, didn't necessarily meant he did. However he did. Then he searched for jobs, got one. The company sent us the paperwork, we filled it in and they lodged it. Made it so much easier as we got the right paperwork the first time, didn't have to use an agency and pay more money! We also learnt that there are different rules depending on which state you want to work in.
Good Luck
