try this is you have windows xp

Right click on my computer the click properties - click hardware then device manager - click on the plus next to cd/dvd rom drives

right click on the offending drive then click uninstall

click ok and the warning

now click on the plus next to the ide ata/atapit controllers

ignore the primary and secondary channels

right click on the one that says controller - then uninstall - click ok on the warning then click yes to restart

when pc restarts it will say found new hardware and after a while the pc will ask you to restart again - restart

test your drive does this work

If not is you drive shown in my computer ? if not then you may have a problem with the windows registry - a program may have added upper and lower filters.

if it is shown then this will not be the problem.

Click start then run - type regedit - on the left click on the PLUS next to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >then SYSTEM > THEN CurrentControlSet > then Control > then Class > Look for a Value that starts with 4d3 (and loads of other numbers and letters) ends with 318 - you may have more that one - when highlighted there should be some values in the right hand pane - if you have lower and upper filters in there - right click on them a delete each - then click on file and exit and then restart your computer.

Also in the device manager double click on the primary id channel - then click on the advance settings - make sure both devices have for thier transfer mode DMA is available

The best way to see if it is a software or hardware problem is to create a bootable cd and then restart your computer - if it does not recognise it outside of windows then it will definatley be a hardware probelm
Try this link for a generic bootup disk - see below

if this works then it will be a software related problem - try a third party cd reading program - goto www.download.com and get some from this site

Hope this helps

Either the discs are dead, or the drive is.

Try several different discs, not ones that you've stored data on, but ones that you purchased that have some sort of software on them. If they don't work, it's likely that the drive has failed.

You could check to see if there's a problem another way.
Click on the Start button.
Right click on My Computer.
Select Properties.
On the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager button.
Scroll down the list to see if there's an exclamation mark on your drive icon.

As a PC and MAC techy, I get to fix a lot of weird troubles!

One neighbor ''lost' the DVD/CDrom and couldn't load her Scrabble game!

three shops gave up, wanting to sell her a drive, but theirs didn't work in her computer after install!!! Her DVD Drive worked in their shop testers!

I went into the CMOS SETUP and looked at the PCI features, and the channel was "OFF!!! Turned it ON, and all was well!

Power glitches can cause weird changes in computers! Always run a computer on a Un-interruptable Power Supply!!! (especially in FLORIDA! Power is distributed in a serial system, NOT in a GRID, like elsewhere, so, any power switching is transmitted straight down the state peninsula, at the speed of light!)

Progress Energy measurement here, in my house, for three days a month apart, recorded 20,000 pips per hour, of voltages exceeding 17,000 volts, over 72 hours solid, each time!

I own/run 12 UPSes to run ALL my TVs, Stereos, game consoles, and computers! Still, my TVs go green, or red, often... comes in on the Cable TV wire!

Florida is also the Lightning Capital of the USA!
Run http://pclinuxos.com as it is a LIVE CDrom!
