Vining plants like curcurbrits (Melons, squashes and cukes) do, indeed branch. The first branching is easy to see when the plants are very young. Each "leader" or reaching vine coming from the base of the plant will continue to branch many times along its length. So, you have branches near the base and many more "higher up" or farther along the vines.

There r no branches in a water-melon plant.Perhaps the branches are runners just above the soil as in pumpkin and strawberry.
