ie: the front one is white and the back one is yellow?

It's to make recognition easier, I can't remember why now but the yellow background makes the numbers and letters easier to read for longer as the vehicles drives away.
I'm sure it something to do with the yellow making it easier for the eye to recognise letter shapes.
I's nothing to do with camera technology as some others have suggested the colours were determined in the early 70's before cameras existed, prior to the present colours UK plates used to be silver on black.

As per previous answers. Originally number plates used to be black background with white numbering. However to make them easier to read this was reveresed. But the only white light that should be visible on the back of the car is when reversing, it was felt that light reflecting off a rear number plate could be misleading so was changed to yellow as next best colour. I know other countries have other rules and sure they all have good reasons for them!

The yellow number plates is for nite vision coz you have 2 small light under the number plate of the rear is easy to glow so that people can see the number plate read if is white at the back unable to read at night with light on toward the white number plates.

Its so when you are a policeman driving around darkened areas at night looking for naughty litle car thieves. The first thing you see is the reflection of the numberplate, and the colour determines front or rear of the vehicle. So you can then decide whether to sneak up behind or ram into the front of them.
Then they can approach the car safetly and say hello to the driver three times.

It's not for speed cameras, the white and yellow plates (IN UK) have been around way before speed cameras were even thought of.

if you see a yellow plate in front of you the car is driving away from you and and if its white its coming towards you, then you have reaction time if he is going to hit you (this is considering its at night, the other driver is drunk and he hasn't got his lights on)..........i guess........don't quote me on that

well in my country (singapore),
there are two main colours yellow or black. they are for the car owner to choose.. i suppose you can choose one that suits the colour of your car body better! there is also a red one. which indicates that the owner is only allowed to drive during off-peak hours and weekends because he has bought a different kind of road tax. i guess the reasons vary from country to country.

where is this? Not in my area of the globe. Both plates are identical except for a little sticker on the rear plate letting them know its registration is up to date .

it all depends on the person.... here in our country cars with red plates means that it is a government employee, yellow are for public transportations, and green are for private cars....
