Magpies/ Birds?

1 for sorrow, 2 for joy etc, where does this saying originate from, and why do we salute a magpie, when it's on it own?

Because a magpie on its own is me and you should all salute me obvs! lol I honestly dont know anything about this saying or where it originates from tho.
