OK, (I'm assuming you have XP) - go to 'start' - click on 'control panel' - when window opens - click on 'add or remove' - when window opes - to the left side of that window are a number of icons in a column - click on 'add or remove WINDOWS components'. Put a check in the box entitled 'Fax Services' it will then lead you through initialisation of your 'fax' service.

Yes, you CAN use your existing telephone number. If you send/receive a lot of faxes you may want to buy a dedicated fax line which would have its own phone number.
To find out what the number is, you simply call your cell phone (from the fax machine) and look at the caller ID, if you don't know your phone #.
Keep in mind, that if you are using your phone line for human voice type calls, your fax machine will not be able to receive anything because the sender will get a busy signal.

You can attach a combined phone and fax machine to an ordinary phone line, in which case it will (on answering) tell the caller to speak now if they want to leave a message OR wait for the fax tones. The same applies if you answer the phone - if you hear fax tones coming in, you press the right button on the machine and it will take the fax message.
If you really want to be flash, for about £4.50 a quarter, BT will give you a second number over the same line, to use as a fax number. As it's all on the same line, you hear a different ring (a single broken ring) if somebody dials it, and that means you leave the phone alone, the machine will do the business for you. It's all fun, and everybody will think you've got two phone lines!

Just contact the Telephone Exchange. There you will have to fill a form and they would provide you the number. Simple.
Also one more thing if you want to send fax from MS word you can do so by following procedure:
File> Send To> Fax Recipient........
