Most sources put it's origins down to smoking Opium (obviously through a pipe) and it's subsequent illusions.

The first recorded written example was from a George Ade Play in 1896. He made no referance as to it's meaning but that was in Chicago.

Pipe Dream has been referenced to Opium Pipe smokers in the 18th and 19th centuries, but is American in origin. The earliest reference is in an 1896 play "Artie" in which he uses the phrase to explain his loss in business, but the meaning was not made clear

I would think as someone sits smoking a pipe and they watch the smoke and feel relaxed they get lost in a form of reverie...dreamy kind of state

i saw some people smoking opium once(a long time ago)i t was like black tar sorta stuff and they sat round burning it over a flame and sucking the smoke up through these long thin pipes (like long straws)the people who answered opium are most probably right
