According to the Narasimha Purana, if he is not worshipped at the beginning of a ceremony, he creates obstacles for the performers. Therefore, no matter what the occasion or ceremony be, Ganesha is worshipped before all other deities. For this reason, He is called Vighneshwara, the Remover of all Obstacles.

His Father is Lord Shankara ( Also sometimes called Shiva) &, mother is Devi Parvati.

It is also said that Parvati jee once removed her body pack (ubaTana - a paste of besan- gram flour & oil or cream, etc top be applied to whole body & massaged), after rubbing it, the pieces fall down as waste, she picked them up & made a paste again & formed an idol of a child & by her powers converted to a child. Then she declared him to be her child, also Lord Shiva proclaimed/ adopted him as his child.

He is also known as one of the 5 panch-devas, which are said to be everlasting, neither born , nor dieing ever. They remain ever & ever. So This is only an incarnation of Ganesha, & got his parents as Lord Shiva & Parvati, else originally, he is having no parents, just like Shiva, Vishnu, Soorya & Devi Durga(Shakti).
He was also worshipped in the marriage of Lord Shiva& Parvati. That time incarnation was not there but the original Lord Vinayaka.

lord vigneshwara is known by many names like lord ganesha, ganpati, vinayak lambodara etc.
His parents are Siva and Parvati and brother karthikeya.
Legend has it that Ganapathy himself wrote the Mahabharata, to the dictation of Guru Veda Vyasa.
He is also considered the most intelligent. A challenge was thrown to brothers Ganapathy and Karthikeya by Sage Narada. The challenge was whoever went around the globe first would have the fruit first. Karthikeya went around the world which took quite some time while Ganapathy went round his parents thrice and claimed the fruit. The logic he gave was that since his parents represented the universe he had gone round them.
