There are a set of stimuli and responses that out body reacts to. Chewing is an action which triggers off the secretion of the 'digestive enzymes' in our body, so that when the food we swallow reaches the stomach, its ready for being digested. Such an intervowen mechanism.

Hunger is there when the enzymes are secreted but there is nothing to digest. When we chew gum, we do the 'action' of chewing - but there is nothing to swallow. So the digestive enzymes secrete, but find nothing to digest. Hereby you feel the feeling of 'hunger'.

I think it has to do with the fact that you are chewing and your brain thinks that as eating and you get hungry because you're not actually eating. But for me, it helps my hunger go away.

chewing gum is actually not good for you because you are activating the digestive juices in your stomach but there is no food in there to digest

Because we are using the eating mechanism and not actually getting any food so the body gets confused and gets hungry.
