You could just try simple things like saying hello when you sit next to someone. If they drop something, pick it up for them and try to start a conversation....

No need to be nervous! Remember they are probably as nervous as you! Or worse! The first day you just got to act totally yourself, if some asks you a question answer how you would normally, don't try to impress, that will put people off. Act yourself, if they like you then their your mate if not then oh well, even if you did become friends in the start with that person you wouldn't sustain it because you don't like the same things! I'm allways mad, no changing that! I'm changing over form sides next year from y to x and y and x only see each other 2 breaks a week, but I've got some friends there, 1 i've known years the second is his mate who is way funny. The third is in all the school brainy competions, so thats how I know her. Just talk to someone, if you think someone would be interesting go up and say hi, ask them whhat they think of the school, and say I'm way nervous, that will make them more comfortable around you. After that you'll be talking to them about whatever the conosation changes to! So good luck mate.

Remember names, compliment alot and don't be afraid to touch them.
But don't overdo it to the creepy side. A nice pat on the upper back and a "high (insert name here), I like your hair today, it really looks nice," while patting on the back and showing a nice smile.
This is rarely a way to make an enemy. People like the sound of their own name, and they like compliments too. I am sure you do as well.

no need to get nervous. You have to keep yourself cool ,they are not going to tear you apart. be openminded & extrovert. try to open up conversation & beak the ice initially. Talk out general things & know their views.

i start with approaching the one who is not in any clique/ in groups so that i can clique with them. Or perhaps u can approach those friends who are of bubbly and friendly character first (it may helps to calm down the nervousnesss) ;)
