BBC2 Colour Test Broadcasts, 1967
In the weeks before BBC2 began its colour launching schedule, there came a series of test broadcasts of regular programmes. The first of these seems to have been an edition of Late Night Line-Up.
Colour Launching Service
BBC2’s scheduled, but limited, colour service began on 1st July 1967 from the following transmitters and their relays:
Crystal Palace - London
Sutton Coldfield - Midlands
Rowridge - Southampton area
Winter Hill - Lancashire
Emley Moor - Yorkshire
Belmont - Lincolnshire
The other BBC2 transmitters remained in b/w for the moment.
The first programme was a four-hour live broadcast of day 6 of the Wimbledon Tennis Championship, with commentary from Bill Knight and Keith Fordyce. The colour OB unit and cameras provided pictures for BBC2 only; BBC1’s 405 line black-and-white service had its own set of cameras and also its own commentators, even when covering the same match as BBC2. (This arrangement changed in 1968, when colour cameras fed both the b/w and colour services). Unfortunately it appears that this inaugural colour broadcast does not survive in the archives, although it was definitely recorded, as it was used for colour highlights the same evening. However, colour video of the men’s singles final highlights from 7th July 1967 does exist, if you want to try to get a look at some early colour VT.
The other colour programmes the first week were: The Virginian (a Western series), the documentary strand One Pair of Eyes, a play in the Impact series, and the daily arts and discussion programme Late Night Line-Up.

In my view, the first TV programme to be shown in colour in the UK was on BBC2 in 1967, probably Daktari. Prior to that, in the UK, colour broadcasting was experimental and the earliest example, according to my late parents, was at the Festival of Britain in 1951 where a CCTV system was demonstrated.

CBS broadcast its first colour show on June 25, 1951. The transmission was an hour long show of Ed Sullivan and Arthur Godfrey. Bonanza, which made its debut on NBC in 1959, was the first regularly broadcast TV program to be filmed in colour.
