i have lived in bellingham for 9 years this month so i guess that qualifies me as a hamster, the local term for someone from or living here. it was a nice smaller town that boomed when college was in session, with somewhat reasonable housing costs. however within the last 2 years its getting packed up here, you cant find a house for less than 200 thousand (and thats a one bedroom shack with an outhouse). there is alot to do here with hundreds of miles of hiking/biking trails, the bay is a little too polluted to swim in except in certain places and even they are still pretty bad. the local lakes while nice and scenic are also fairly polluted and not the best for swimming. however if you are a kayaker or enjoy jet skis there are alot of opportunities for you. fishing and crabbing are popular during the summer months and for a small licensing fee you can reap abundant fresh seafood that would cost hundreds of dollars if purchased. not alot of hunting opportunities for big game but there are a few areas for water fowl and pheasant. overall local weather is fairly good, summers have been in the 70s to 80s. in the years i have been here the worst snow storm lasted 5 days and left a whopping 3-6" of snow depending on where you live.

Bellingham, WA is in an absolutely gorgeous part of the state. It's pretty far north ... not too far from the Canadian border. It has a "small town" feel. It's near Anacortes, where you can board a ferry and travel up the Strait of Juan de Fuca (pronounced "Few-ka") through the San Juan islands and into Canada. It's a beautiful trip ... one not to be missed. Bellingham receives quite a bit of rain each year, which is why it's so green.
It's not toooooo far from Seattle, which has some great places of interest that you'll probably want to visit. The Pike Place Market is a really awesome place.
Hope you find this helpful. Angels ARE with you.

Bellingham is a cool place to live! I moved there from Oregon 3 years ago, and never regretted it a bit! Bellingham has a lot to offer culturally, and in outdoor activities. It has a large athletic center, lots of parks, trails, and places to bike. And the location is perfect .. not only aesthetically and for outdoor activities, but being an hour from vancouver, BC and an hour and a half from seattle.
Also, something to consider, with the winter olympics scheduled for 2010 in Vancouver, BC, you can expect to see some development and preparations in the Bellingham area as well I would think. Also, they are starting now to get volunteers for the olympics ... so that is an opportunity for those interested.
Bellingham and the surrounding area is an ideal place to live. It isn't quite as wet and grey as seattle, and it gets a bit colder, too. Kind of has it's own weather pocket. And Mt. Baker is a half hour drive to the ski area!

I'm not from Bellingham..but I've been there many times...I live in Vancouver BC Canada..about 1 1/2 hour car ride away. It's a nice smaller place..they've kept up their older houses really well...and It's close to canada so there's a lot of border traffic...its about half way between Vancouver and Seattle. The big industry there used to be pulp and paper but I'm not sure if that's still true or not.

RE:
Considering moving to Bellingham, WA. Good idea or bad?
No particular reason or prospects there, but I enjoy moving every few years to a different part of the US. I've never been to the Pacific Northwest, and the Chamber of Commerce stuff makes the place sound interesting, but that's not too surprising. I'd really like to hear from current...

Bad, Bad, Bad.
Bellingham has been overrun by people moving there and is not the same as it was even 5 years ago. Consider it a suburb of Seattle.
It is way colder than seattle and there is a constant breeze that blows right through you. During the winter the town is dead.

Listen to Andres Montoya - he knows more about it than the rest of them put together.
If you want a small town - choose La Conner.
For a larger town, I prefer Mount Vernon to Bellingham. You should also check out Bellevue and Redmond (home of Microsoft.)

I've been there many times. It is pretty nice up there. It's grown in the last few years like everywhere else.
