only to discover that you can't move at all? You're freaking out trying to move and you feel like something bad is going to happen, but it seems to take forever to actually be able to move any part of your body....You can see everything around you, so you know you're not sleeping, but yet you can't move anything? What's up with that?

It's called sleep paralysis.

You can try to avoid it by not sleeping on your back. (Most incidents occur when sleeping on your back.)

I used to do some drugs when I lived with my mom, and I wasn't sleeping much. I had that problem a few times, and it freaked me out. I got all paranoid about aliens and stuff. But after I went into the foster system, and cleaned up my act, I asked a doctor. He said that the body produces a chemical that actually paralizes major muscle groups in the body to a certain degree during deep sleep and stuff. He said that for some reason, I must have had to much at the time I woke up, and it hadn't cleared out of my system yet. He said it only takes a few seconds to regain movement, but when your freaking out, it feels like forever.

Yeah, it's so freaky and scary. The event is called "sleep paralysis". It happens when your brain is over-stimulated and your body is sound asleep. One time, I was lying in bed next to my boyfriend and he started breathing very hard and really erratically. I figured he was having a nightmare and hesitated to wake him up. When I finally did he was so grateful because he had been having sleep paralysis and breathing crazy like that was the only way he could get me to wake him up. Weird.
