On and Off. the milky way is a drunken out of equilibria and you have the sensation that you can float, you are very much lighted in weight, you would feel that you have a soul and it is hovering into mid-air. you would love to be drug-drunk all the time. you need to see a doctor, you have probably a mental schizophrenia or neurotic out of this world, end the world, let's go to heaven, back to space and to new civilizations. that the milky way syndrome.

Galaxies collide on a regular basis throughout the universe. Do a Google search of photos of "colliding galaxies" and you should find several. It is only at large distances that cosmic expansion overtakes gravitational attraction.

No particular reason. They just happen to be moving that way in the local group of galaxies.

BUT - if you look "outside the box" at "groups of groups" of galaxies farther and farther away, you'll start to see a net expansion.

It's just that here in the local group, the unversal expansion isn't great enough to counteract the motion of our two galaxies towards each other.
