As you are using Ethernet, I guess, and if you are using Windows OS do the following:

Setup the network configuration through new NETWORK connection wizard.

select LAN establishment in corresponding location.

After completion restart your systems.

Right click on a folder and go to properties. there choose sharing tab. and give permissions to read and write.

Then you can access two systems from one another by going to My Network places.

There you assign some IP address for your two systems, these should be unique for your two computer.

this is all available in windows help ;-).

Enable application sharing by using whatever software XP uses these days (used to be NetMeeting).

Make sure PC2 can connect to PC1 and both computers can work on the file.

well it depends that what do you have in pc2, if its a link of a file in PC1 it will automatically update the changes once u save it. but if it is just a copy of the file in pc1. you can update the first one and copy-paste it in pC2 or even overwriting option is okay.

Use a thumbdrive (aka flash drive, aka USB flash disk) would be the simplest to transfer data between computers.

Otherwise if networking the computers would make it more conveninent.

Your first choice #1...better to delete than paste. Prevents duplicate files.
