You have to find out why the cranky mood, stress, bad health, or lack of sleep, among others and then work on the problem. If you are like most people, you need to eat better and exercises and the cranky moods will dwindle.

I loved the T.V. show Friends, and I have all ten years of them on DVD. There is usually a show for any occasion, so i just pop it in the DVD player, take some deep breaths, and laugh myself back into a good mood. If that's not on the agenda, I listen to CDs on the headphones, read a book or a newspaper, or take a drive. Or I call a friend that can relate. It all depends...

Mix yourself a drink. or better yet, take a straight shot.
Or, if you are trying not to be cranky at someone in particular, try to think of anything about that person that makes you feel sad for them (maybe that person had childhood?), this will make you feel too guilty to take your bad mood out on them.

Think happy thoughts! I'm a little cranky myself, I hate that feeling, usually I try to do something to distract my brain away from the cranky for a while to try to 'adjust my attitude'.

Well, you could have a cocktail if you drink, have some herbal tea if you don't, read a book, call up someone you dislike and hang up on them (block your # first) or just sit in a nice hot tub with candles and totally relax with your beverage of choice. Of course, if none of those ideas sound good, find someone and get busy with it. At least it will de-stress you if everything goes in your favor!

It'll sound silly, but go for a brisk walk. Exersize helps me when I'm in a lousy mood. 30 min does the job.

have a nice big glass of coke and vanilla vodka, watch a good movie, and a call a good friend over to finish the night off with.

I get some sleep. If I am snappy it usually means that I have been working the midnight shift and I am freaking tired.
