You have to consider the era in which it was written to fully appreciate her independence. Women were raised to be submissive, meek, domestic, etc. Their role was to be, first and foremost, someone's WIFE. Jane Eyre defied that stereotype which was a big thing for the time it was written.

It's my favorite book! Jane Eyre is my hero! I admire this women! I can't find needful words to describe my delight... I just like her! She is awesome! She is so strong... And also I like one idea of this book... Central heroes weren't beautiful, but they loved each other so much, theirs inside worlds were so similar... And therefore they thought what they are the best for each other... I read this book over, and over, and over again a million times!!! Amazing book, amazing Jane!!!

damn i dont remember much but she was independent because she got through everythign on her own with very little help. im sorry i cant help much but try sparknotes.com to find ur answer cuz that really helped me.
