I'm not here to lecture you on the dangers of smoking or how inconsiderate it is to smoke in public, so don't jump the gun.
I was just wondering what made you decide to smoke? Like what was the fascination with it? I just couldn't imagine inhaling the toxins into my lungs. I just really want to know, why?

First off Moonfairy, When did I lecture? I said that I wasn't going to but wanted to know why people did it. Secondly, how can you sit there and act like cigarettes won't kill you? Your lungs are meant to breath in air, not nicotine or any of the other crap that they put into cigarettes. It's just common sense, which you apparently lack. I really don't give a crap if you sit on your porch or in your car and kill yourself. I just get sick and tired of people who think that they should be able to sit in a restaurant and smoke with a bunch of nonsmokers, or people who light up while in the car with their children locked in. I think the ones who are considerate of the people who choose not to smoke are within their own rights to smoke. Whatever. I clearly stated that I wasn't trying to lecture. I was just curious to know why, so that I could try to understand why, so don't lump me in with all of the people who don't try to even understand it.

BTW, I tried smoking when I was 13 but found out that it wasn't the thing for me, so don't act as if I've never even tried it before and have no idea what it tastes like. Plus, I grew up in a house full of smokers and they didn't care if you were sitting right next to them, they smoked. I only began to hate the smell of it when I got pregnant.

I first started after drinking, it was boosting the pleasure. but after a while I started smoking regularly but honestly it doesn't feel good when I smoke, at the same time it doesn't feel good when I don't smoke. which means addiction. both physical and mental. I think the best way to stop smoking is not starting it.

People like this have no clue.. It isn't you right at all to lecture, so I would hope you wouldn't even try. Nobody is hurting you so get over it.. Stop believing the lies!
I started smoking when I was 13, inhaled at 14 (in the 70's) and was hooked by 15.. We didn't have those litter warnings on the side.. We had NO CLUE about smoking being "bad" for you (ps I question this anyhow)...
We also ads on tv for cigs :-O
Everyone I knew smoked, my parents, my friends, if you wanted to be one of the kewl kids you smoked ciggs and pot!
Now, While people say we are addicted, I can agree to a extent.. But I LIKE smoking and that is MY business not yours or the other anti-smokers. It seems everyone feel the need to stick their noses where they do not belong. How is me smoking in my car hurting you? Or on my front porch? It doesn't..
You want to know what kills more than smoking? Alcoholism... Drinking and driving, drinking while pregnant, you should see what that does!! Guess who are taking care of those kids? Me and people like me thats who.

I agree with you, there are dangers in smoking a carnicogen. I used to be a smoker. Started at the age of 17. I didn't think it was cool or anything. I just felt it was a way out from the stresses of life. Not only that, when I was much younger, I was curious. I kept seeing people smoking everywhere. So one day, I picked it up and took a taste after this man threw it away. I know it must sound disgusting. But to an eight yr old, it was impressionable. I've quit after 8 yrs of smoking. But as I remember what kept me smoking was the taste of bitterness and warmth, the feeling of relief in my mind, and the physical preoccupation. When you smoke, people don't think about the toxins too much, rather when there next one is, or even how much it pleases them to have that freedom to relieve or to pleasure oneself with such a thing. Hope it helps to answer your Q.

When I started smoking they didn't have all these warnings of how bad it was for ones health or any information about second hand smoke. The first time I tried it I didn't care for it as the years went by I tried it several times then came the day I liked it and now I am addicted. It's so hard to quit, harder than any drug is what the Doctors told me.I quit drinking Alcohol after a few attempts but it was easier than quiting smoking for me.

I was totally against smoking till about 19. Then, I started working at a pub, and just got dragged by the flow of everone around me smoking. Now it's just an addiction I guess. I also like the taste.

Oh man. My answer would be the same as SUSAN's I guess. You start because of peer pressure or curiosity, but you really get addicted to it. It seems like not a big deal to nonsmokers, but you wouldn't believe what it takes to quit--it really is hard. Someday we'll see cigarettes simply outlawed because of it's addictiveness, and the long term damage it does to half the people.

I've been smoking since I was 12. At first I started because it was "cool" and now it's just hard to kick the habit.

Well, people who don't smoke or never have just don't understand, it's really hard to explain but it's terribly hard to quit trust me. Smokers don't want to harm other people, at least I don't.
