I live in an unincorperated area of Contra Costa County, CA and I am wondering what the laws are for the carrying of swords. I want to wear one for a halloween costume. I have a nice rapier that I use to practice fencing. The blade is sharp though. I would like the most specific laws possible, and a link to pages containing these laws would be great, as well as posting them here. Thank you.

Mikeysco is correct, as usual. And with cites.

The last point is the key. While carrying a prop weapon can be a good addition to a costume, the safety concerns are important. Live steel (sharpened) should never be carried or drawn in a crowded setting, especially around people who don't know what they are doing.

If you want the costume bits, either get a fake sword at Wal-Mart, or take the handle off the blade and attach it to an empty scabbard.

I won't even get into how bad an idea it is to use a sharpened blade for practice fencing.

after a search, i did not find any laws in that location concerning swords. my advice is do not carry a sword in public there. the government there seems to hate weapons, and they will ban swords if they see one carried in public. then you wont be able to practice fencing at all.

In California it’s illegal to protect yourself or property so forget the sword. Even if it was plastic it would have to have a big orange cushion on the end.
