I always take my friends out to the following:
- for views, the Equinox (but the food is overrated, and also similarly overpriced), but the views are spectacular. It is a revolving restaurant on top of a hotel.
- for ambiance, there is Chapeau, which is a French restaurant that is like a true French restaurant (the owner is actually french!)
- for overall food experience, the Slanted Door at the Ferry Plaza

Everyone says that the "Slanted Door" is the best for Vietnamese food. Except it is overpriced. If you want asian food, look at the "King of Thailand". Man,,, it has a nice atmosphere, the price is cheap, but the portions are HUGE!!! and very yummy. Very friendly staff. I was at the location near Union Square, but I'm sure I saw atleast one other location while I was there last week. King of Thailand,,,,or just go anywhere on the Wharf around Pier 39. I hear they have a really good seafood place that I think is called "Scobey's", but don't quote me on that name for certain, I think that's it. But you know what ??? Anywhere on the Wharf or in Little Italy is amazing, there's so much to choose from :) But I liked King of Thailand because of the low price, great portions and great tase !!

nice is considered to be expensive with various things on the walls. "nice" restaurants often means having to pay a bigger tip for you will be made guilty to do so. Do you want this uncomfortable feeling?
do you go to restaurants for this supposed definition of niceness or for the quality of the food? good quality food does not mean having to pay a lot.
My suggestion is to go to the Sunset District. There's a great quality sushi restaurant there....ask me and i'll get the name of it, and for a great pizza, ask for the large two-topping special (and if u can handle sausage, get a double sausage..it is much different than most you've ever tasted) at Brother's Pizza on 46th and Taraval...you won't want to eat in there as it's too hot from the ovens, but instead you can walk a few blocks and eat it on the beach.

For a vistor, I recommend the clam chowder and fish and chips. Anywhere along the wharf is really good.
For something unique I like Citizen Cake and Oola.
Also, Beach Chalet and The Cliff House both offer great SF styled platers, with great sweeping views of the ocean.

It has a great classy and interesting atmosphere and amazing magazine photo ready food. ( not to metnion amazing taste) And it is not that expensive either. The service was great as well. Go to the Slanted Door (located in the Ferry Bldg) for the best Vietnamese cuisine on the West coast, or try Tadich Grill for the best seafood SF has to offer.
Slanted Door requires reservations and Tadich Grill also serves lunch (be there by 11:30 in order to get a table at Tadich)
Be safe and enjoy

Cortez on Geary has some of the best food I've ever tasted. It has small plates, so you can share, making it a great place to talk & hang out. The place is very hip, and the food is eclectic. The aformentioned Slated Door and CIty Hall are also very good.

Is your friend a Seafood fan? If so, try The Eight Immortals on the west side. Yahoo! Yellow Pages can show you where it is exactly. Try the filet of flounder, it kicks serious a.ss.
