Kicked out.

Either the poor sod has been given one boot which is useless unless they have one foot even then it has to be the correct boot for the foot, no pint in giving someone a right boot if they only have a left foot.

Or they have been fired from their job, removed from a club or association, pushed out of there circle of friends, or their partner has left them.

There is a worse alternative, being given "The Boot", that was part of a homicide investigation therefore implicating them in a crime they are no part of, now that would probaly be one of the worse boots to be given, short of being given a boot with a grenade in it.

The first record of 'given the boot' in print is in Sir H. Rider Haggard's 'Colonel Quaritch', 1888:

"There'll be the money to take over the Moat Farm and give that varmint Janter the boot."

This saying may have originated earlier as, to give someone, "The Order of The Boot" similar to the 'Order of the Garter'.

In general it means to use the boot to kick someone out of their home or job.
