I have in mind the following sentence; "This war bought Country A and Country B vast popularity in the XYZ region." Please tell me what this sentence mean. Thank you!

"Buy" has far more definitions than "purchase". In your sentence, the definition would be "obtain through effort". If you don't mind the constructive criticism, your sentence structure needs revising too. It should be more like: "This war bought vast popularity in the XYZ region for Country A and Country B"

Another defintion for "buy" is to "obtain through monetary payment", which is the same defintion as purchase.

It isn't 'bought'. It is supposed to be 'brought'.
