I've been told many times that I should be trying to get at least 8 hours a day but my body automatically wakes up after 5 or 6 hours. If you feel refreshed and don't find yourself getting tired part-way through the day, then your body can most likely handle only 6 hours of sleep.

I only sleep 4 to 5 hours daily, for about the 30 years. Nothing wrong with me.

I read an article on this once. It was a study on how lack of sleep and too much sleep affected people's hearts. They came to an amazing conclusion. People who had less than five hours of sleep at night had much greater incidence of heart disease. The study also examined affects of too much sleep (over 8 hours a night). That showed a higher incidence of heart problems in its participants as well. People who slept an average of 7-8 hours a night were the healthiest in the study, with way fewer incidents of heart disease and memory problems. 6 hours is less than ideal, but I think you're alright. That's my opinion. If you could bump it up to 7, that would probably be best for your health.

Well considering the average White/Blue Collar person only gets around 5hrs of sleep a night 6 would be wounderful, but no its not healthy for the body which requires min. of 7hrs of sleep a night. After a certain amount of time your body will shut down and recharge its self.

different people have different sleep needs.

How much sleep do I need?

The amount of sleep needed varies with each individual. The NSF suggests a simple experiment to determine your optimum amount of sleep. You need a week or so to determine it, so you should be able to go to sleep when you're tired and wake up naturally with no alarm clock. Taking a vacation or planning to have someone to help with your children is necessary to do this test.

Simply go to bed when you feel tired, and get up when you feel ready -- don't set an alarm clock. For a few days, you might be sleeping more if you've been deprived of sleep. But once you catch up, your body will tell you just how many hours you need to restore yourself each night. Once you've learned this important fact about yourself, you can adjust your schedule accordingly.

I'm almost positive we can live with out sleep at all such as insomnia but Ive heard it kills brain cells. Personally staying up for a day or two does make me react slower.

You need good sleep so that you can function well — both mentally and physically — during your waking hours. Good sleep can enable you to work productively, make sound judgments, avoid harm, and interact with other people effectively.
