Insurgents and radicals use this term. True followers of Islam do not. Besides there are American Muslims. Islam recognizes Christians and Jews as "People of the Book." and acknowledge that we are God's children as well.

I thought this just meant "UN-believer" until i read alot of the qua ran, now I think its also a slur, because unbeliever and infidel are used numerous times together in the same passage.

Because we do not share their faith and belief system. They see this as lacking faith, or not holding the "true" faith. Of course, everyone knows that there is not one true faith for everyone. Faith and belief don't come in one-size-fits-all.
