Because the body has no need for coloring, the body does not process it, and it goes through, unchanged, into your waste. The most common cause is an artifical dye from some food. I know Captian Crunch Berries turns poop a frighteningly bright green. Many natural foods also have poop-turning qualities, the most common of which is blueberries. Despite what some of the other comments have said, it is usually blue colors that turn your poop green. If you can't think of anything you have eatten that could have done this, and it lasts for more than three days, you need to talk to a doctor, just in case. While it is most probably something you ate, it could be that you are not digesting parts of your food.
I recently had an experience with the above mentioned breakfast cereal, and thought it was funny that it started 24 hours after I ate it, and stopped half way through the next bowel movement.
On a more vital note, be sure to call a doctor if you ever have dark red, maroon, or black stool, it can be a sign that you are bleeding internally or rectally.

could just be something you ate, or could be a sign of an infection in the body. It could also be related to the colour of what you ate...if you had a lot of greens..ya know? If it continues see a doc but dont worry too much. If your diet has a lot of artificial colour in it and a lot of iron, it can cause your stool to be green.

The foods we eat can affect stool color. Think back over the last 3 days and remember what it was that you've been eating.

For Elisa S: Iron preparations typically turn stool black.

A lot of food dyes can cause that. Been drinking much blue Kool-Aid or Gatorade?

it can be from all the things listed above, but if it is often, or not in conjunction with what color you ate or drank, or your medicine, it could be bile (from your gallbladder) if it continues, or you get sharp pains under your shoulder blade, or you get sick after eating a high fat meal, go see your doctor to find out.
