Typically the closer you are to the basket the more of an impact you can have on the game. So a dominant Center is more coveted because it is easier to control the game offensively and defensivley inside-out. Because dominant centers are much much rarer than dominant gaurds and forwards, then many championship teams have won based on gaurd play. But all things being equal, DEFENSE and REBOUNDING wins championships.
You can win without (in fact most people HAVE to) but its so much easier knowing you can dump it down low for garunteed points, and that you can play tight d on the perimeter knowing that you have a big shot blacker behind you.

It's hard to say. It is a team sport and a great player at any position will be the most important. But I'd have to say the PG is slightly more important than any other position. He sets everyone else up and gets them into the game. He is the "coach on the floor" who calls the defense and offensive plays. Remember that stiffs like Luc Longley and Rasho Nesterovic won rings riding MJ and Tim Duncan's coattails.

it's a team sport... all 5 positions are important in basketball. the bulls won 6 championships without a super dominant center, didn't they? could the lakers have won all of their championships without magic or kobe? it's a TEAM sport.

point guard sets up the offense.... the center sure couldnt do it. the point guard can get open by himself. the centers walk about with the defense on their back. the guards also drive to the basket to score. centers mainly stay near the basket.
guards lead the way.....

All the positions are important. You can build your team around your best player by fitting role players around him.
