Why is this engine slow off the start ? if it wasn't for the low first gear it couldn't get out of it's own way. Is this normal or is their a way to supe it up?

Too much weight for small engine.

Are you hauling a lot of extra stuff?
Clean out the trunk-a few hundred pounds may make a difference.
Change fuel filter and check air filter.

The trans in many older Benzes start out in second gear when the shifter is in the D position. Those that start out in first gear shift into second very quickly unless you hold the throttle all the way to the floor. First gear in most Benzes is a serioulsly low ratio "granny gear" and most won't kick down into first gear above 10 MPH.

A trick to fool some of the older cars into starting quicker is to put the shifter into 2 for a few moments at a stop light while your foot remains on the brake, then back to drive. It should start out in 1st instead of 2nd.
