Wow good question. I've owned both, Boston Acoustic with a 10" passive radiator drivin by a 5" mid bass and Dahlquist with a ported 10" bass enclosure. It really comes down to the quality of design and manufacture.

A passive radiator uses another driver to provide the "energy" for the passive radiator. With a passive radiator system a speaker needs only two speakers powered and the radiator helps to fill out the lower end.

A port gives a boost to the base at the frequency it's tuned to. Many times ported systems are used to give exaggerated booming bass so at times they can get a bad name, due to bad design not the fact that it's ported.

Both can sound very good but a ported system with a true bass driver will out perform a passive radiator system simply because the bass driver is actually powered and not relying on another (usually mid/bass) driver for it's energy.
