by no means should it be folded. i work in a book bindery/print shop and i run the machine that makes magazines. if its a std. 8 1/2X11 it shouldnt be folded, however if it was 5 1/2 X 8 1/2 and came through the mail it might have been folded from the mailer house.

Well, everything I looked at talked about how to clean your mat no mention of folding it in half. Granted they all talk about rolling up your mat but this is cause rolled up mat is easier to carry and doesn't flop around. It'll take time for the crease to fall out of you mat but I'm sure it'd do no harm to your mat.
