It's not monotone. Each rapper has their own distinctive style and sound. Some stand out, others just fade away cause they sound the same. The real test is what they are saying. Sure most are talking about their whores and bling and cash, but some are actually telling a story i.e. Kanye West, Tupac and Nas, just to name a few. Some are comical like Ludacris, and some are always angry like DMX. No, not all rap is good. All of any music genre isn't good. Some rap music though, is good for dancing, entertaining and sometimes even thought provoking. Music is music, it's just different people telling their story in their own way. I personally don't care for the excessive cussing. I think that's completely unnecessary.

You will stress yourself out trying to find anything else. Rap is somethign record companies create to make a quick buck for themselves. The "rap artists" are disposable, as they often are found, made, promoted, sold, and disposed of. OFTEN. You will notice the musical lifespan of a rapper is very short compared to any othe rtype of music because it is planned to be successful for only 2 or 3 successful albums and then disappear, or take to advertising to make $ for the company.

The lack of content, or 20 word vocabulary, or single paragraph of topics allowed in rap make the genera that much more quickly made, and disposable. Same with the music which is often so simplex, it could literally be generated by a computer, and note progression algorythm over a drum loop. The actor (rapper) usually dosent write a thing, and only poses in the sponsors clothing, leased jewelery, and posed for photoshoots and music videos. They are more models than musicians.

And as long as 1 black actor can make $ for 75 white suits, rap will be popular. Rap leaves anyone over 40 who has been a musician , or follower of music shaking thier heads.

the trick to appreciating good rap music is to pay attention to what they say and how they say it. If it's good you'll notice a quite high level of wordplay and metaphor use. Not something like 50cent but more in the Wu-Tang sort of vein. Also if you really enjoy the beat making process you can really enjoy the clever and sometimes quite difficult construction of samples, original music and drum and bass lines. My first tip, turn off the radio and listen to some real hip hop.

there is more to rap and it is not just talking in a monotone voice. you have write and rhyme like 4 to 5 verses each song. and you have to find the right beat to go wit your song. all that can take a while to do

rapping was suppose to be street people talking themselves up using rap and the idea was to see who can go the furthest and come up with the most meaningful lyrics
i think basically in those neighborhoods, if you can't rap, then you can't hang in the street, or at least with cool people

okay....lets put it this way

its not an art

its people speaking to a beat
anyone can speak, and anyone can make a beat

and what they "rap" about is usually crap about hoes, drugs, and bling

the only way its an art is maybe when they write about something meaningful, which i do see, but very, very rarely
