Older Benzes were pretty much bullet-proof. They had some serious reliability issues in the 2000 - 2005 model years because they dropped the ball on quality control verification of their suppliers. Before and since then they're much better. And 80's vintage and earlier ones are built like tanks. If you stay on top of the body rust they'll run for decades.

I have had several older Benzes that ran well over 300,000 miles with nothing more than routine maintenance -- oil and filter changes and trans service every 100,000 miles.

MB transmissions generally give lots of advance notice of impending failure. They'll start to slip a bit many thousands of miles before giving up the ghost. If you take it easy when that starts happening, another 50,000 miles is totally possible if not probable.

About the only thing that goes bad on the rear end is the rubber boots on the CV joints back there. Once one ruptures, the CV joint will fail very quickly. The parts are a bit spendy at a dealer but after market units are pretty reasonable and changing them out isn't very hard at all. For a few extra $$$ you can get the entire axle assembly and bolt it in in about an hour. Been there, done that!

Have the rear-end oil and transmission oil changed. get another 280k miles. Mercedes BenZ will run forever. I have almost 400k on my 1986 300E. My heats not working on the drivers side seat. Hope we have a mild winter lol
