I'll be setting off for Lebanon on Sept.30 to volunteer there. As everyone knows that this is a war torn country, especially with the recent Israel-lebanon war, which robbed the poor childrens' pure innocence and childhood....I hope to be one the the people to steer these kids from the thoughts of war, death, tankers and bombs....

however, this will be my first time volunteering overseas, and I ain't too sure if I should bring my laptop along with me(for communication purposes).I wouldn't want to bring my mobile phone,as I fear the poor reception at Lebanon makes no difference at all......

Hope to hear more from you guys!

Thanks!

Ignore all the ignorant answers above, here is a resonable one:

Theaft is not common in most areas of Lebanon, use common sense just as if you were in the USA and dont walk with your laptop under your arm in a run down neighborhood.

In most hotels there are hot spots, you can also find them in some coffee shops (not only in Beirut).

Cellphones are also very common. During the war some cellphone towers were destroyed but reception is back in most areas.
You may bring your own cellphone but I suggest you buy on in Lebanon with a pre-paid card and this will be significantly cheaper.

One last suggestion: If you intend to travel to areas where Hizbullah is in control (Soouth Beirut or sooouth Lebanon or Bekaa valey) it is possible that your computer will be searched (with you in present) because they are afraid of spies and news reporter who do not coordinate with them. This should not be a problem just make sure you dont have Israeli contacts in your email lists or any Israeli or pro american websites on your favorites folder (if you do, than you are in trouble). Also make sure you don't have porn on your disk in any way because they are religeouse and will confiscate the computer for that (porn is not illegal in Lebanon).

Just use common sense and be safe.

Bottom line:
Take a laptop, you need email and internet.
Buy a prepaid cellphone in Lebanon.

one more tip for your visit: everyone will try to give you propaganda of their side, be polite and listen, but take averything you hear with a grain of salt. In general, the Christians and the Druze hate the Hizbullah and blame them for the recent war but are scared of them and will not tell their true thoughts to a stranger since they carre for their lives.

I highly recommend that you don't go to Lebanon. It is very dangerous there.
